Biden’s special envoy said that the White House is looking to create legal ways for Central American migrants to reach the U.S. amid the sharp increase in illegal crossings over the past few months. Ricardo Zuñiga, Biden’s envoy to the Northern Triangle countries in Central America, said during a visit to Guatemala that the White House was looking to offer protections to migrants amid a push by Biden to reshape the U.S. border policy. Zuñiga was also set to visit El Salvador this week, and discussed migration “in a comprehensive fashion” with the Honduran Foreign Minister last Friday.

Earlier this week, the federal government agreed to prolong Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras and Nepal. TPS status for beneficiaries from these countries was extended by DHS until at least October 2021. TPS approves some foreign citizens who come from countries that experience natural disasters, armed conflict or other events to stay in the U.S. and apply for work permits. DHS must renew their status regularly in six- to 18-month intervals.

The Houston Chronicle shares the stories of teens who entered the United States through the Central American Minors program, which was instituted by the Obama administration in 2014 to allow children and teens from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala who fulfilled stringent requirements to apply for protection here from their home countries. The Trump administration terminated the program in 2017, and minors who were granted humanitarian parole through it and have lived with their families in the United States for several years are now receiving denials of their requests to renew their two-year legal status and notices ordering them deported.

- The BIA ruled that the 10 years of continuous physical presence required by 8 CFR §1240.66(c)(2) for an individual seeking special rule cancellation of removal under the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) should be measured from the individual’s most recently incurred ground of removal, at least where that ground is among those listed in 8 CFR §1240.66(c)(1).
