Earlier this week, the federal government agreed to prolong Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras and Nepal. TPS status for beneficiaries from these countries was extended by DHS until at least October 2021. TPS approves some foreign citizens who come from countries that experience natural disasters, armed conflict or other events to stay in the U.S. and apply for work permits. DHS must renew their status regularly in six- to 18-month intervals.

USCIS published a notice in the Federal Register extending the designation of South Sudan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, from May 3, 2019, through November 2, 2020. The re registration period runs from today, April 5, 2019, through June 4, 2019.

Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge Derrick K. Watson in Hawaii blocked the Trump administration from implementing the majority of the latest version of the president’s controversial Travel Ban 3.0, hours before it was due to take effect. Today, Politico reported that U.S. District Court Judge Theodore Chuang in Maryland granted a second nationwide preliminary injunction against the travel ban. As this updated AILA practice alert notes, in light of these rulings, nationals of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Chad will not be restricted from traveling to the United States. Trump keeps trying to unconstitutionally ban people from other countries and keeps getting struck down by the Courts.

The State Department announced that the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, has resumed immigrant visa processing in Sudan for the first time in nearly 20 years. Starting in July 2015, applicants for all categories of immigrant visas will be able to interview and process their visas in Khartoum.
