The Trump administration unveiled a rule in October that would require prospective immigrants to prove they have health insurance before they can receive a visa. Currently, the policy is blocked by an emergency order that ends on November 30. Yesterday, Judge Simon from Oregon issued a preliminary injunction against the health insurance rule, blocking it while litigation proceeds. The main focus of the ruling was that the policy was inconsistent with the INA, the governing law enacted by Congress.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado denied motions to dismiss Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) and unjust enrichment claims in a federal class action lawsuit filed by nine federal immigrant detainees against The GEO Group, Inc., a private prison contractor, alleging violations for unpaid wages and forced labor. This is the first time that a court has found that a for-profit immigrant detention contractor may be held liable for violating the TVPA.

DOS announcement that the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon and the U.S. Consulate General in Ponta Delgada will no longer process immigrant visas or diversity visa applications as of 3/1/12.
