First 100 Days of the Biden Administration

On his first day in office, in addition to presenting immigration reform legislation to Congress, the president and his administration took a number of immigration-related executive actions. President Biden issued a proclamation revoking discriminatory bans on entry to the United States and an executive order revising civil immigration enforcement policies and priorities. The DHS acting secretary issued a memo directing DHS components to conduct a review of immigration enforcement policies and, beginning January 22, 2021, to pause removals of certain noncitizens ordered deported for 100 days. DHS also suspended new enrollments in the MPP program. Further, the president issued memos on preserving and fortifying the DACA program and reinstating DED for Liberians, a proclamation terminating the national emergency with respect to the U.S. southern border and redirecting funds diverted to border wall construction, and an executive order revoking prior presidential actions that excluded undocumented immigrants from the apportionment base following the decennial census.

Supreme Court to take up census battle

Months ago, President Trump announced he would order the Commerce Department to exclude undocumented immigrants from census reporting, which is used to determine state’s seats in the House of Representatives. Nearly half the states, including several cities and counties, filed suit and compared his move to slavery-era rules that limited which “persons” were counted for political purposes. Nearly 30 amicus briefs were filed on the issues. The Supreme Court took up the case in October, and is scheduled to hear oral argument

Reuters: Here’s How California Plans to Fight Donald Trump’s Immigration Plans

Reuters reports that on Monday leaders of both houses of California’s legislature introduced two bills to protect undocumented immigrants in the state from efforts to deport them once President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, 2017. One measure would set up a fund to pay for lawyers for immigrants facing deportation. The other would train criminal defense attorneys in immigration law. “Immigrants are a part of California’s history, our culture, and our society,” stated Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. “We are telling the next administration and Congress: If you want to get to them, you have to go through us.”

Immigration Reform

It appears that Immigration Reform may not happen this year. However, it is important that you call your congressional representatives and your immigration attorney to try to give your opinion. There are 12 million illegal immigrants here in the U.S. and many would say that the system is broken. The deportations are up, illegal aliens keep arriving and employers hire many people illegally. A new system that takes the reality of immigration and is not just an enforcement tool would help all involved. Harry Reid is moving forward with the Immigration Reform.
