White House said it had reached agreements with Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala to step up military presence at their borders in an effort to stem migration to the U.S. It is unclear exactly when the U.S. reached the agreements with the three countries, with the White House only saying they were signed in recent weeks. Under the agreements, Mexico will maintain a presence of 10,000 troops along its southern border. Guatemala will send 1,500 military and police personnel to its border with Honduras, while setting up 12 checkpoints along migration routes.

Earlier this week, the federal government agreed to prolong Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras and Nepal. TPS status for beneficiaries from these countries was extended by DHS until at least October 2021. TPS approves some foreign citizens who come from countries that experience natural disasters, armed conflict or other events to stay in the U.S. and apply for work permits. DHS must renew their status regularly in six- to 18-month intervals.

The U.S. and Guatemala made an agreement to send asylum seekers at the U.S. border to Guatemala instead. On Thursday, the first Honduran asylum seeker was sent to Guatemala under the agreement. He had arrived at the border near El Paso, Texas, but was flown to Guatemala. This policy has been criticized, since Guatemala suffers from many of the same dangers as other Central American countries, including gang violence. Because of this, it is unclear how many asylum seekers will be sent to Guatemala or will return to their home countries instead. In this first case, the man has already asked for assistance to return to Honduras from Guatemala.

The DHS announced Friday that the validity of TPS documentation of recipients from 6 countries has been extended through January 4, 2021. The six countries affected are El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras, and Nepal. The expiration dates for Employment Authorization Documents; Forms I-797, Notice of Action; and Forms I-94, Arrival/Departure Record have all been extended. The extension is a result of preliminary injunctions in cases in California and New York. If the injunctions are overturned, TPS will end for all listed countries no earlier than 120 to 365 days after the court decision, depending on the country.

The Houston Chronicle shares the stories of teens who entered the United States through the Central American Minors program, which was instituted by the Obama administration in 2014 to allow children and teens from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala who fulfilled stringent requirements to apply for protection here from their home countries. The Trump administration terminated the program in 2017, and minors who were granted humanitarian parole through it and have lived with their families in the United States for several years are now receiving denials of their requests to renew their two-year legal status and notices ordering them deported.
