The U.S. and Guatemala made an agreement to send asylum seekers at the U.S. border to Guatemala instead. On Thursday, the first Honduran asylum seeker was sent to Guatemala under the agreement. He had arrived at the border near El Paso, Texas, but was flown to Guatemala. This policy has been criticized, since Guatemala suffers from many of the same dangers as other Central American countries, including gang violence. Because of this, it is unclear how many asylum seekers will be sent to Guatemala or will return to their home countries instead. In this first case, the man has already asked for assistance to return to Honduras from Guatemala.

CBS News reports that a government official confirmed a previously unreported death of a 10-year-old girl from El Salvador while she was in the care of an Office of Refugee Resettlement facility last year. She was the first of six migrant children to die in U.S. custody — or soon after being released — in the past eight months.

The Associated Press reports on the increase in denials of applications for special immigrant juvenile status following USCIS’s change to how it handles cases involving immigrant children who turned 18 before their paperwork had been completed. Lawsuits have been filed in New York and California to challenge the policy change and denials.

DOJ announced that Attorney General Jeff Sessions notified all U.S. Attorney’s Offices along the southwest border of a new “zero-tolerance policy” for offenses under 8 U.S.C. §1325(a), which prohibits both attempted illegal entry and illegal entry into the United States by an individual. Sessions further directed the U.S. Attorney’s Offices to prosecute all DHS referrals for §1325(a) violations to the extent practicable.
