DOS press release announcing a three percent increase of international students in the U.S. to a record high of 690,923 students during the 2009-2010 academic year. This growth was due in part to a 30 percent rise in Chinese student enrollment to 128,000 students.

Government Accountability Office (GAO) report finding that the DOS passport issuance process continues to be vulnerable to fraud, as the agency issued five of the seven passports GAO attempted to fraudulently obtain. GAO obtained three passports, but DOS had two recovered from the mail before delivery

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that Department of State (DOS) issued U.S. passports to thousands of registered sex offenders during FY 2008. Currently, DOS has no statutory authority to deny passports to registered sex offenders, except those convicted of sex tourism.
