Associated Press – Federal Jury: Immigrant Detainees Are Owed Minimum Wage

 The Associated Press reports that a federal jury has determined that the GEO Group must pay minimum wage — rather than $1 a day — to immigration detainees who perform tasks like cooking and cleaning at its for-profit detention center in Washington state.

Biden Administration Considering Payments to Migrant Families Separated at the Border Under Trump

The Hill reports that the Biden administration is weighing the possibility of paying migrant families separated at the border under the Trump administration roughly $450,000 per person. DOJ, DHS, and HHS are all considering settlements in lawsuits filed on behalf of those families, which could result in payments of nearly $1 million a family.

Federal judge settles lawsuit on harms to border environment.

A federal judge in Arizona settled a lawsuit filed against DHS and CBP, saying the agencies failed to study potential harms to the environment from increased enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border. The judge sided with the Center for Biological Diversity and AZ’s Rep. Raul Grijalva in the lawsuit they filed in 2017. Brian Segee, the center’s legal director for endangered species, said the decision is “a win for wildlife and communities along the border,” and now hopes the Biden administration will look more into what enforcement can do to protect borderland flora and fauna.

Biden Administration Will Let Migrant Families Separated Under Trump Reunite Inside U.S.
